Three-Point Lighting Project

In class we completed a project using a three-point lighting system. This project was to demonstrate the use of multiple studio lights. We used three types of studio lights, a key light, a back light, and a fill light.

I used my classmate, Bradley Hubbard as my subject. I had him sit in the middle where I took six photos.

The first photo will be a wide shot showing the setup with Bradley sitting in the middle of it.

This is before we added any lighting.

The next image will consist of a close up shot of the subject.

This is also before we added any lighting. The next image will consist of the key light.

This image shows only our key light being used. The key light is the primary light source for your photo. It is often place in front of the subject. The next image will use both the key light and fill light.

This image is using both the key and fill light. The fill light is helpful in reducing shadows and contrast. It also creates a more balanced and appealing image. If you compare the right side of Bradley to the first close up, you can see how the shadow disappears.

The final close-up picture is going to display the key, fill and back light.

In this photo all of the lights are being used. The back light is the light that is behind the subject. This is used to clean up the lining and add a rim around the edge of your pictures. It is also known as the hair light or edge light. Each light is highlighting a different aspect of the picture.

The final picture will show a wide shot of all the lights on with the subject still in the middle.

This is the final look after using every light. This assignment taught me about the fill and back light. I've heard of the key light and what it does, but I did not know how the fill and back light added more to your picture.
